Cantus – Musiker 2013

Born and raised in Podhale in a family caring for folk traditions and customs, Graduate of the Academy of Music in Katowice, Poland, in the vocal and acting department. Working with highlander groups operating under the patronage of the Polish Highlanders.

Together with Jan Karpiel Bulecka band “Zokopiany” she recorded a CD with »Nuty spod hol« and “Ginie sniezek po holach”. Already during her studies she often took part in concerts of folk bands and traditionals groups in the country and abroad (Germany, France, Bulgaria, Slovakia). She participated twice in workshops in singing of the Mozart Summer Academy in Salzburg.

Then she founded her ethno/folk band »Rybka i Przyjaciele«, later »Hanka Rybka«. Concerts at different folk festivals in the country and beyond its borders. She won many ethno/folk music competitions.

In June 2002, Hanka Rybka represented Poland at the 25th Folk Festival of European Broadcasting Union in Pula, Croatia. Since April 2004 she worked with the chamber Tatra Orchestra conducted by Agnieszka Kreiner. In May 2006, Hanka Rybka participated in a large project for the Polish American Community in Chicago.

In 2007 she was invited to the project prepared by the legendary American jazzman Bennie Maupin. The result of this collaborative work is the album »Early Reflections« released in April 2008 in the U.S. market. The record includes varations of jazz, inspired by music of Szymanowski. The record and Hanka’s vocals gathered great reviews. Concerts promoting the album have been in the U.S.A. (LA – Hollywood, New York), Germany  Slovakia, Italy, Switzerland, France and Poland.

She began studying music at the Coimbra conservatory of music, then finishing the classical singing course at the Lisbon National Conservatory. 

She went to New York where she participated in the Jazz Seminar which was part of the JVC Festival at the Manhattan School of Music, directed by the saxophonist Phil Woods. She participated in the Casa de Mateus Foundation Jazz Seminars with the singer Norma Winston. 

Then she worked with a trio of North Americans comprised of Armen Donelian (piano), Portinho (drums) and David Fink (double bass) playing in the New York clubs and the following year (1996) in various cities in Portugal. In 1998 she recorded her first CD with Paulinho Braga (drums), David Fink (double bass) and Clif Korman (piano).

In 2003 she recorded »Quase Então«, a CD in duo with the renowned Portuguese pianist João Paulo Esteves de Silva,  2005 she recorded »LISBOA QUE ADORMECE«, a project created in partnership with the renowned double-bass player Bernardo Moreira, with a repertoire of composers and poets  In 2007 »FADO ROUBADO« was published, also under the musical direction of Bernardo Moreira, where poetry plays a very important part, including authors such as Fernando Pessoa, Ary dos Santos, Zeca Afonso and others. In 2010 »RAÇA« was published, in collaboration with the group LisBones (group of trombones and euphoniums).

Paula Oliveira participated in Jazz Festivals in Portugal and abroad and in various television programmes, a special note going to “Operação Triunfo”, where in the first three series she appeared as the voice and style teacher. She directed the main actress in the film »Amália«, in her interpretation of the original playbacks.

She has a Masters in jazz, and is preparing to begin her Doctorate in the next academic year. She is part of the teaching staff of the Luís Vilas Boas Jazz School at Hot-clube de Portugal in Lisbon, and is a voice teacher on the Jazz Course at Évora University and Universidade Lusíada in Lisbon. She conciliates her pedagogical activity with her singing, performing throughout the country and abroad.

ART“; Vorsitzender der Peter Kowald Gesellschaft; Unterrichtet Saxophon und Improvisation am Fachbereich Wuppertal der MHS Köln

Benjamin Schaefer (geb. 1981) studierte von 2001 bis 2008 Jazzklavier und Komposition an der Kölner Musikhochschule bei Frank Wunsch, Hans Lüdemann, John Taylor und Joachim Ullrich. Er war Mitglied des Landesjazzorchesters NRW und des Bundesjazzorchesters (BuJazzO). Tourneen dieser und anderer Formationen führten ihn bereits in zahlreiche europäische Länder sowie nach Russland, in die Ukraine, die USA und durch sieben Länder Zentralamerikas.

2011 wurde ihm der Förderpreis der Stadt Köln (Horst und Gretl Will-Stipendium für Jazz und Improvisierte Musik) zuerkannt.

Sein »Benjamin Schaefer Trio« gewann 2007 beim »Concours du Jazz Européen« in Avignon den Publikumspreis und den Preis für die beste Komposition. Im gleichen Jahr erhielt das Trio zudem den »Niedersächsischen Jazzpreis«. Das Trio gastierte in wichtigen Jazzclubs und auf zahlreichen Festivals, spielte Doppelkonzerte mit Roy Hargrove und Abdullah Ibrahim und wurde von BR, WDR und SR mitgeschnitten.

Auf seine Debüt-CD »Shapes & Colours« (2004, Double Moon/ Jazzthing Next Generation) folgten zwei Veröffentlichungen für das renommierte Label Enja – »Roots and Wings« (2008) und »Beneath the Surface« (2010). Alle Alben erfreuten sich national wie international bester Kritiken.

Seite September 2010 wird das Benjamin Schaefer im Rahmen des stART-Programms von Bayer Kultur gefördert.

2010 erschien zudem die erste CD von Benjamins neuem Projekt »Expressway Sketches« – auch diese Band wurde begeistert aufgenommen (von der Fachpresse ebenso wie von rbb und BR), sie spielte zahlreiche Konzerte und fand zuletzt lobende Erwähnung im vom Goethe-Institut herausgegebenen Artikel »Jazz 2010. Eine Rückschau.«. Zwei weitere Eigenproduktionen werden in Kürze veröffentlicht – eine zweite CD der »Expressway Sketches« sowie das bereits vierte Album des »Benjamin Schaefer Trios«.

Neben seiner künstlerischen Tätigkeit arbeitet Benjamin Schaefer seit 2009 als Dozent für Jazz-Klavier an der HfMT Köln.
